MLV 39 Tech 5

Well I’ve got to say the Premier’s had a very good win over Fraser Tech by 39 – 5 after leading 20 -5 at halftime.  Two things stood out for me – Much improved goal kicking by young Sevu Reece (6 out of 7 attempts) and tenacious defense. Both of these factors will be of huge importance in games to come. Tech had their moments and in fact lead 5 -3 after about 10 minutes but Melville steadily built pressure and the points came. A penalty try before half time was the result of some very good forward pressure and I thought Dale Shane is playing the sort of football he is always capable of. Great to see the Stag Trophy on display as the teams ran out onto the field.  This Saturday sees us away to Hamilton Marist and is another one of those must win games if we are going to cement our position at, or near, the top of the ladder.

The curtain raiser saw Melville face off against an unbeaten Tech side who had been winning games by wide margins. Obviously no one had told our lads as the proceeded to run out winners by 50 -8 ! Talking to some of the guys after the game, they told me a motivating factor is their desire to make the Premier side and to do this, they know they have to perform in the Development team.

The U85’s travelled to Te Awamutu and came away with a very good 32 -8 win. This week sees them at home at 1.00pm to Morrinsville whom they lost to in a pre season game
