Melville vs United Matamata

Well two out of two with bonus points is not a bad start for the season. The Premiers win over Matamata by 46-14 was a little mis-leading as Matamata are no pushovers and in fact lead 14-8 late into the first half. A three try scoring burst with tries by Johnny Galloway, Jacob Ale and Kylem O’Donnell saw us jump out to a 34-14 half time lead. The second half saw us miss out on a number of scoring opportunities and in fact we only scored twice in the second half. We have not quite got the balance between attack at all times and a bit of conservatism at the right time.. We will need to get this right for the games ahead. Lineouts were also a bit of a problem and we all know how important this aspect of the game is. On the positive side though, it is thrilling to watch the speed and flair of this side. Not since the days of the late 60’s and  70’s have the Melville supporters had so much to enjoy. This kid Sevu Reece, just out of Hamilton High, playing at fullback, reads the game well and has he got some speed!   The Development side turned in a cracker of a game winning 59-16 and if this team can stay intact, they will go a long way in their competition.
We play Matamata at Matamata next time – on their 20th Anniversary! George Simpkin has them going well so they will be a harder proposition on that day.
