ABOUT US

MISSION STATEMENT

“TO CREATE THE BEST SPORTS CLUB IN THE WAIKATO IN BOTH TEAM PERFORMANCE AND CLUB ATMOSPHERE”

We are a family orientated Sports Club, nestled in the state house area of Hamilton City.
We boast in excess of 300 members and field teams in the Waikato Senior and Junior Rugby competitions as well as fielding 2 teams in the Hamilton City Netball competition. Throughout the rugby season, there are over 22 senior and junior teams who proudly wear the infamous Green & Red jersey. They are cheered on by arguably the most loyal supporters in the Waikato. From the old days of ruling the bleachers at the old Rugby Park in all sorts of weather to nowadays descending on our home at Collins Rd or travelling en masse to away games, you cant miss the Melville supporters, colours blazing, loudly cheering and sometimes (not often) offering a wee bit of advice to the Referee.
Most importantly we are a family friendly club, we’ll welcome anyone who wants to be apart of our awesome MLV family! Our after-match hosting is legendary, from our entertaining speakers to the best team meals seen anywhere in Rugby land, we like to make our visitors welcome. The old adage – “what happens on the field, stays on the field” is held sacrosanct. We welcome anyone and everyone into our warm and inviting Clubrooms. We are always full on a Club day and make a point of including all teams and sports that play under the MLV banner. Our juniors are presented with their “Player of the Day” awards by visiting guests and are supported and photographed with members of the current Premier team. This has been a highlight of our Club for 18 years now and is well regarded by the parents.

As the only full Sports Club in the lower socio-economic area that makes up the Melville area, it is recognized by our members that we must provide full support to our Club Juniors and by association, the local schools. We have a high presence in local schools – whether providing coaching and mentoring to teachers and students, assisting with training equipment and providing the grounds and facilities to host visiting schools/teams. To date we have achieved this via donations of time and equipment, localized fundraising and sponsorship by local businesses.

Melville have won 2 Waikato Club Rugby Championships, the first in 1978 and again in 1981. 1981 saw us produce our first All Black when Arthur Stone made the tour of France. (For more please refer to our History page)
